Who are we

And what is this about
Driving Creek holds true to Barry Brickell’s vision of being a place thriving with inspiration, innovation and old world values, we share this with our community by running exhibitions and learning programmes, and offer free artist residencies.

The Residency Programme is a unique opportunity for artists to work in Barry Brickell’s historic home and workplace. We provide a place for artistic freedom, collaboration and shared learning, emerging artists develop relationships within the artistic community.

By cultivating connections and bringing artists together to work alongside each other, challenging people to grow within their own craft and as individuals, we encourage and celebrate active contribution from those within our community.

Driving Creek cares for Barry Brickell’s personal collection and the New Zealand Ceramic Heritage Trust’s Collection and continues to archive the multitude of unique works.
Barry Brickell always wanted to share his world with other creatives and to offer them a sanctuary; an opportunity to have the time and space to be free, a chance to get fully immersed in a project without the distractions of normal life.

Driving Creek continues Barry's legacy by offering artist residencies to any form of artist in this slightly magical setting, where you have time to grow your craft, work on an existing project, idea or concept, and experiment and refine your artistic expression. You have the unique opportunity for self-directed creative freedom within a supportive and collaborative environment, where connections within the artistic community can be cultivated while you work alongside one another.

Driving Creek does not offer any formal awards or qualifications, and there is no fee for the artist residency. Instead, we ask you to chip in here and there to keep the co-operative spirit of the pottery alive and continue growing in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination.

Basic on-site accommodation and shared facilities are provided for you during your residency. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions or would like more information.
